Bienvenidos!

Welcome to my ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Blog. I hope that this blog can help others to gain new insight into the ESOL program. Here are some bits of information that I have gained over the last few years of teaching...hopefully they are helpful to others.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Here is a list of three great accommodations that can help you to work with your ESOL students:
1.  Supply students with examples of what you are looking for on an assignment.  Some teacher feel this is cheating, but if you give a Non-English student an outline of what the others are working on by providing sentence frames, graphic organizers, or word banks, they will be able to show you what they know without language interfering.
2.  Assign a Buddy to help our newer students.  This does not mean someone to copy everything from or to do all of their work...it means someone to guide them in the right direction.
3.  Write directions on the board...this works best if you use the same words everyday.  That way the newest student can understand what he/she is being asked to do and can follow multiple stepped directions with the knowledge that they can look up at the board to ensure that they do all steps.  This way if they understood step one, but didn't understand step two they can double check themselves.
